This Sunday, Ekta talks to Cecile Gasnault, Brand Director at Smile Markers, to discuss her career journey and the brand’s mission to revolutionize the idea of female sexual wellness in the retail mainstream.

“So, the whole journey began years ago, and when we looked at the topic of sexual wellness (specifically in people with vulvas), we realized it was twofold. On the one hand, vibrators and lubricants (vibrators specifically) are widespread in the U.S., and more than one out of two women have already used a vibrator in their life… So, it was widespread, but two-thirds of non-users were curious to try, so the market for non-users who wanted to get into that category was already quite massive. On the other hand, it was not addressed with the offering on the shelf, the quality of the products, and the distribution strategy.” (Gasnault).

Cecile and her team saw the lack of effort into the sexual comfort of people with vulvas and their discussion of safety and health. It is where Smile Markers shines with its ability to fulfill desires and create a safe space for positive sex education.

“When we looked in more detail on the topic of sexual pleasure and how it is connected to our health, we found a lot of scientific studies documenting the mental and physical health benefits of sexual wellness that have to do with the fact that when we experience sexual pleasure our body really sees a whole cocktail of hormones that have an impact on our mood, conquering the effects of conjuring stress hormones and therefore boosting our immunity, boosting our mood, and helping us sleep better, even decreasing some types of cancers.” (Gasnault).

Smile Markers is making a massive impact on the meaning of sexual wellness within marketing but, more importantly, showing the science behind sexual pleasure. Now more than ever, this conversation of sexual wellness in people with vulvas is critical in the future of sex education experiences. Cecile and her team have done a tremendous job in promoting pleasure items for the sexual experience and health benefits.

“To us, it was shocking that this is a topic where scientifically speaking, there shouldn’t be such a huge taboo to exist and even more so around the topic of female pleasure. So, we wanted to change the category and make it a mainstream category to normalize the perception of female pleasure. So, it was important for us, for example, to bring the category to mainstream retail, and we were the first brand in that space to do that!” (Gasnault).
