Dr. Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell, Co-Founders of Beekman 1802, Podcast Summary
This week Ekta talks to Dr. Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell, Co-Founders of Beekman 1802. They met in 2000 in New York City, Brent was a physician who worked for Martha Stewart in her health and wellness division. Josh worked in advertising and wrote several books. They were in Upstate New York and found this farm and fell in love with it, so they bought it. They got a letter from a farmer nearby named John who was losing his farm and he had 80 goats and he asked to move onto their farm, which is what started it all for the two.
“In 2008, We both lost our jobs in the city in the recession, and we had to figure out how we were going to save the farm. We not only had the farm, but we had a farmer and 80 goats. We googled what we could make with goat milk, we saw that we could make goat milk soap, we first started making the bars of soap and gave them out to our neighbors in Sharon Springs, NY. They were coming back and telling us that the soap was helping them with their skin conditions.” (Ridge).
Josh says that Kindness is the DNA of their company, and that shines through, in their dedication to the brand and their farm as well as their products. “We have had the great fortune of traveling a bit in our lifetimes, and every single country we’ve been to, we always go to farmers markets and there’s always some form of goat milk soap, so everyone knows how great it is for skincare.” (Ridge).
