As we kick off our Labor Day weekend special, Ekta sits down with Helen Reavey, Celebrity Hairstylist & Founder of ACT+ACRE Haircare, to discuss her journey as a stylist and revolutionizing the haircare system in the fashion industry. Helen has a special place in her heart for hair care. As she grew up in her hometown in Northern Ireland, she knew she wanted to venture into the business of cosmetology. However, she has always been a person who thrives on creative freedom, and being a hairstylist allows her to spread her wings, and her work continues to bring forth tremendous opportunities for her to grow.

“Back in 2013, I actually moved from Ireland to New York for one opportunity to work in fashion week. So, this wasn’t like to a whole new job or anything, but I had worked for almost ten years in Style Lounge and back home and you know trained and done whatever. So, this was like my first experience outside of Style Lounge to work in Fashion Week and you know I was just like so happy to be in New York. It’s just like the city where dreams come true right!” (Reavey).

After finishing off New York Fashion Week in 2017, Helen saw that many models would with their hair after several shows leading to constant product build-up.

“Then that kind of brings us to like 2017, when I was leaving the show for Paris Fashion Week. And my husband came to surprise me, and we were backstage, and he was like watching me like in my element designing the look, working with the models, and I say to him I made this comment. I was like “oh it’s really annoying I wish I had something to give the models”. Because they’ve arrived here, they have done a New York fashion week and Paris is like the last on the kind of tour, but they got so much product in their hair, and their scalps, their red bothered, and you know their tender to touch. And what happens is out of build up the hair just won’t kind of like behave properly.” (Reavey).

From there, a light bulb went off, and she convinced her husband to work with her to start a brand with innovative products to tackle the wear and tear of hair in such a buzzing industry.

“So, I’m saying this to him, and he was like “what this is a thing” and so this light bulb moment went off and kind of like the rest was kind of like history…. We came back to New York, and I came next to him and said, “I think we should start a brand”! (Reavey).
