This week Ekta talks to Jan Marini, Founder, and Chairman of Jan Marini Skin Research, in part 3 of 5 Masterclass Series, Skincare Myths Debunked. Jan breaks down misconceptions of summertime skin protection from retinol use to home acne remedies. Jan wants everyone to protect their skin year-round but most notably in the summertime as constant light exposure can rapidly damage the skin. Although we all want to go out and enjoy days in the sun or even time at home, we must take precautions to protect our skin.

“Everybody needs to wear sunscreen. The more melanin you have, the more protected your skin is, but many people with dark skin have developed skin cancers; its just not detected as easily. You have to wear sunscreens indoors. The UVA range of light, which penetrates your skin like an x-ray, 50%
goes through the cars windshield, light clothing, and its intensity all year long. You need to wear your sunscreen all the time, and you need to wear it indoors.” (Marini).

She even discusses many go-to acne remedies, such as toothpaste, and how it can not only make acne worse but also cause skin irritation.

“That is an urban legend that just persists and persists. First, an acne lesion is the end of the process. There is absolutely nothing in toothpaste that will help an acne lesion. Most toothpaste has fluoride, which can be an exasperating or a causative factor for acne.” (Marini).

Jan also discusses the topic of anti-aging and the belief that oils, and other products could assist with this issue.

“In general, no. Essential oils are looked at as being medicinal. Suppose
essential oils are extracted from a cold compress process. In that case, its different than being extracted with a solvent, and sometimes with solvents, it can cause that essential oil to be acnegenic. You want to increase hygroscopic substances on your skin.” (Marini).

Jan aims to change the perspective of the quick fix cure-all in skincare and beauty and discusses how many brands use that to their advances to grab consumers attention. But knowing and understanding how skin functions naturally and with products, we can learn to enhance natural beauty and save ourselves from time-consuming routines.
