This week in our part 4 of 5 Masterclass, Ekta sits down with Jan Marini to walk through a customized consultation she conducted. She implores all to understand that every consultation is different and caters to the individual.

“One of the reasons I ask the question about what somebody uses, it’s not because I want to criticize their choice in products. It’s because number one, when somebody says to you, ‘What are your concerns?’ and you list your concerns, then how is this working for you? And the second thing is that it gives us an idea of how much time someone spends on their skin.” (Marini).

Jan also dives unto the importance of skincare through age as it affects the skin drastically if we lack proper care. From acne to pigment, our skin goes through constant changes, and she wants consumers to keep that in mind with choosing products.

“Every single person on the face of the earth by the age of 35 will have abnormal pigment. And if you don’t have obvious areas where you see contrasting discoloration, where there’s brown spots and then there’s normal skin tone, there’s something called background pigment. Take a picture of somebody when they’re 20, and then take a picture when they’re 35, etc. It’s where the skin doesn’t have that crisp clarity like you’re talking about, where it just looks very uniform. And that’s just cumulative sun exposure.” (Maniri).

Jan wants consumers to ensure they get a product that works for them, and a particular way of that is through proper consultation. Unfortunately, social media tremendously influences skincare and gives an unrealistic view of skin treatment.

“Also, skincare and everything you see on the Internet and TikTok is so seductive. You hear all these promises and lots of times they’re as non-specific as, this makes your skin smoother, it makes your skin somehow vaguely look younger. And really, it’s about figuring out what it is you want to change or improve about your skin. People typically have about three or four things. And then, that’s your runway, and you should select technologies that have some validation that they can address those concerns.” (Marini).
