This Fragrance Friday, Ekta talks to Julie Maskulka, CEO and Founder of Anecdote Candles. Although Anecdote was never a business idea for Julie, as her background is in consult work, she is more than happy that an once home project turned into a successful brand.
“I call Anecdote my accidental business because it was a creative side project in many ways. My background is in consulting. I worked with a few consulting networks doing large program transformation and with a digital agency, launching ventures that have nothing to do with products, fragrance, candles, retail, or anything that I do now.” (Maskulka).
Julie’s journey into entrepreneurship began with a headache as a candle brand she was fond of at the time would make her suffer from headaches constantly, and she craved an answer as to why.
“I went into a very deep internet search, a lot of how-tos, a lot of blogs, etc., and learned a lot about the anatomy of a candle and what goes into fragrances and got a starter kit and just started making candles.” (Maskulka).
Anecdote stands out not only for its delightful fragrances that promote self-care but also for the creative quotes and names of the products. Julie saw that consumers gravitate to those who bring something innovative to the table and step away from the norm.
“Its so interesting when you see how much people related to our quotes and what that brought out in the followers and consumers we had. We started to have people write to us with their ideas, and we just kept it going. It is a really connected community together under this umbrella of humor and a fun way
to look at candles.”(Maskulka).
