In a recent episode, Dr. Ekta delves deep into the journey of mindfulness and yoga with special guest, Rachel Brathen, widely known as the founder of Yoga Girl and a New York Times bestselling author.

Born and raised in Sweden, Rachel shared her tumultuous teen years filled with mental and emotional struggles, as well as physical pain stemming from health issues and a car accident. Her first introduction to meditation came serendipitously at 17, which set her on a transformative path. After moving to Costa Rica, Rachel discovered the healing powers of yoga, emphasizing that while many in the West view it as merely a series of postures, it’s a holistic life science that offers profound insights into living mindfully.

Dr. Ekta resonated with Rachel’s story, sharing her personal experiences of being introduced to meditation through her Indian heritage. Both emphasized that the beginning of the mindfulness journey isn’t easy, with Rachel pointing out how our inherent internal chatter can amplify when we first attempt to meditate. However, just as with yoga postures, persistent practice can lead to longer stretches of peace and silence.

Rachel then discussed the origins of Yoga Girl, which began as an Instagram account during the platform’s early days. Her authentic sharing attracted a vast community, leading to the creation of one of the earliest online yoga platforms, yogagirl.com, that offers a diverse range of self-care practices.

Dr. Ekta applauded Rachel’s efforts in creating a sanctuary for mindfulness in our chaotic world and then steered the conversation toward challenges faced by beginners in meditation and yoga. Rachel acknowledged that while starting can be daunting, with perseverance and community support, anyone can integrate these practices into their daily routine.

In a nutshell, this podcast episode shines a light on the transformative power of mindfulness, the benefits of consistent practice, and the importance of community in our wellness journey.
