This Fragrance Friday, Ekta talks to Raquel Bouris, Founder & Creative Director of Who Is Elijah Parfum, an independent fragrance house based in Sydney, Australia. Raquel’s career did not start as a perfumer as in the past; she was an executive assistant of a hotel group in Sydney, but that soon all changed after complimenting a friend on their perfume at Coachella.
She soon found out the fragrance was from oil from Indian and became instantly obsessed and purchased several bottles, which would start her research on the formulation of perfume and its powerful hold in the beauty industry. But searching continuous perfumers, she could never find a scent precisely like the oil that caught her senses. So, she decided to embark on a new journey to create a line that would not only have an intoxicating fragrance but be unisex as well.
“It all started when I became obsessed with an oil that came from India. I noticed the power of fragrance when people were literally chasing me down, asking me what fragrance I was wearing. Even later, no one could tell me exactly what the scent was of this oil. That’s when I knew the power of scent and the need for something universally appealing for human beings, not men or women specifically. That’s how HIS | Her was born.” (Bouris).
Raquel began her fragrance journey as a young adult wanting to experience extravagant scents without the idea of overpriced luxury. She understood that fragrances should be equal among genders, age groups and at reasonable prices. But Raquel wanted to create a smell that stands out and gives consumers scents that have nostalgic effects.
“Haze was inspired by a friend who loved to layer her perfumes, and I remember telling her how beautiful she smelled, and a month later, that scent came back to me when I was speaking to my perfumer. I realized that Haze had to be a warm scent that stays with you and transports you to a place of comfortable memories like sitting by a fireplace.” (Bouris).
What makes Who is Elijah Parfum stand out is the personal touch that Raquel puts into each product and the idea of creating warm and memorable fragrances. Raquel discusses her genuine love for the perfume industry and the impact that fragrances have on personal needs of luxury and comfort.
