The largest organ of your body is surprisingly your skin! It is also the only organ that is constantly exposed to the environment. Just like your other vital organs, the skin calls for the same attention, prevention and protection. Unfortunately, the skin is sometimes also the largest organ that receives the least care. Some people will only go as far as the occasional sunscreen as a part of their normal healthy skin routine. However, even with the advancement of modern medicine, people with medical conditions are still struggling to see changes in their skin health. Perhaps it is time to take a look at an alternative approach that comes from an older practice.

History & Background of Salt Therapy

Salt therapy originates from the salt mines and caves of Eastern Europe during the 13th century. As salt mine workers hammered and chipped away at the salt caves, they were exposed to micro-sized particles of salt. A salt mine cave is an ideal environment under the earth’s surface that consists of a balance of pressure, humidity and temperature. In fact, salt miners were benefiting from and receiving natural health benefits from the effects of the salt mines. Surprisingly, salt miners were found to be in good overall health. According to the Salt Therapy Association,”They rarely had any respiratory issues and also looked younger due to great skin appearance.” Eventually, salt mines became a popular tourist destination for those seeking the same health benefits.

Types of Halotherapy aka Salt Therapy

Salt therapy is either an active or a passive treatment and it is usually done in a salt room.

Active Salt Room: This salt room has a machine called a halogenerator that disperses micro-sized particles of salt into the air.

Passive Salt Room: This salt room does not have a machine but consists of a room that contains salts. Often these rooms are set up to look like a cave and have controlled humidity. The most commonly used salt in a passive room is Himalayan salt.

Benefits of Salt Therapy

The benefits of salt therapy extend beyond skin health, as it has been associated with improved respiratory conditions and overall well-being. Since salt therapy is natural, it is safe and there are no harmful side effects. The Salt Therapy Association states, “Halotherapy is very beneficial for overall wellness by removing the toxicity from the respiratory system, improving the function and appearance of the skin, and boosting the immune system.” Salt therapy is a great alternative for those looking for relief from ailments such as asthma, allergies, common colds, ear infections, smokers cough and more. In addition, salt therapy can be used to help repair skin cells and protect your skin from aging and infection.

Salt Therapy for Skincare

In essence, our skin, just like the respiratory system, serves vital protective functions for our body. Salt therapy, delves beyond the surface, initiates its effects from within, offering benefits that extend far beyond skin care. Its capacity to alleviate stress, anxiety, and fatigue contributes significantly to overall skin health. As supported by WebMD, halotherapy emerges as a multifaceted approach with documented advantages for respiratory conditions, skin issues, and allergies. This therapeutic method not only addresses skincare concerns such as acne, allergies, rashes, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, wrinkles, and signs of aging. It also provides pH normalization, triggering reparative and regenerative processes in the derma. Furthermore, it enhances skin rigidity, stimulates growth, and promotes improved hair health, as explained by the Salt Therapy Association. The comprehensive impact of salt therapy underscores its potential as a holistic approach to enhancing both the internal and external facets of skin well-being.
