Skin Detox: Do You Think It’s Worth the Hype?
Many skincare products aim to “detoxify” skin and remove all unwanted things from “deep within the skin layers.”
Most of you know that I call BS on all such products!
First, what exactly is being pulled “out” of the skin while undergoing supposed “detox”? Unless you have an infection and pus is leaking out of your inflamed pores, I am not sure what exactly needs to be “drawn out” of skin such that we need a full range of products geared towards this absurdity!
Because the skin is the largest organ in the body and can pick up dirt and grime, some believe it is possible to “purge” the skin and remove all the “bad” stuff clogging pores.
“There’s no such thing as skin detox from a medical perspective,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Fayne Frey.
It is hard to figure out how any part of the body detoxes. Most of it concerns our immune, lymph, and hematological systems. Blood circulation, adequate water intake, and normal sweating are ways the skin is genuinely cleansing and “detoxing” itself. Nothing we apply topically will do anything for a system that regulates systemic physiological processes!
As far as dirt and grime go, washing the face with water and thus removing pollutants from our top skin layers is normal and acceptable. I cannot agree that we need a system to do any detox of the skin.
Let me know what you all think about skin detox. Do you think it is worth the hype or BS marketing?
