Skincare Can Never Go Out Of Style

Skincare has gotten this terrible reputation of being only about beauty products that can be phased in or phased out depending on the mood of consumers, trends set by magazines or celebrities and other things that are indeed fleeting moments and highlights in a billion dollar industry that moves and changes faster than the speed of light.

However, from my understanding after interviewing hundreds of brands , some of which have been founded by true leaders in medical research and innovation, skincare is just starting to take off.

What most consumers don’t understand is that there is an entire biomedical industry out there that helps provide labs (medical and commercial) with things like growth factors, serums to grow cell cultures in, ingredients to test , reagents to use for basic experiments, etc. all of these things are part of the creation and discovery of any new product or biomedical discovery and the price for these fundamental building blocks of research is very high.

The skincare industry is now taking a turn for the better in that consumers are becoming more aware of science backed brands and paying attention to the people who know what they’re talking about: the medical and research communities!

There is so much money to be made in this industry if we approach it from the perspective of any big pharma company or any academia led project funded by NIH where we pour funds into finding CURES! The amount of dollars that are spent on marketing should go towards outlets that not only understand journalism but also the true scientific jargon and RELEVANCE of each step towards innovation.

Beauty venture executives need to start treating this industry as NIH treats medical projects and proposals. We need boards of scientific minded and trained experts to review the proposals coming to them for capital funding and offer GRANTS that help create the products we need!

Skin health is not a trend. It is a genuine topic of great discussion that has fueled not only a growing industry of entrepreneurs to share what they have discovered but also a place consumers can go when they need another option.

Skin is one of the first organs to show and reflect changes in our body’s metabolism and overall health and it is more important now, than ever before, that we support emerging ideas and brands and help them get to the bottom of not only skin related problems but overall wellness.

Lastly, it is a known fact in the biomedical academic community that 90% of dermatology text books don’t have answers to a lot of the problems we see with skin health. The area of skincare is not just beauty oriented or vanity driven but even more so medical science. We cannot negate the foundation of this innovative space based on beauty trends used to project the viability of beauty oriented products such as makeup or cosmetics.

Skincare is here to stay- and rightfully so.
