The Eras of Skin: A Look Back At The Biggest Skincare Trends of 2022
Slugging
- Do you want your skin to be shiny as a slug? Look no further than skin slugging. Slugging is the practice of lathering your face in petroleum jelly as the last step in your nighttime skincare routine. Although this is a tik tok trend, it is surprisingly approved and recommended by dermatologists to repair the skin’s barrier. The petroleum jelly blocks bacteria and dirt from the surface of your skin while trapping in moisture to create conditions ideal for barrier repair. To avoid any damage or irritation, dermatologists recommend not slugging when using any already irritating ingredients, like retinol or vitamin c, and to avoid slugging for those with acne-prone or oily skin.
Skin Cycling
- Skin cycling by no means is a new concept, however this term exploded on tik tok this year. Skin cycling is an application routine requiring three types of active ingredient products: an exfoliant, aretinoidoralternative, andamoisturizer. Thisisanothertrendendorsedby dermatologists who have always been recommending patients to start applying active ingredients intermittently to avoid irritation or skin damage. Dermatologists often recommended a four-day skin cycle regimen. On the first night, cleanse then exfoliate, to rid yourself of dead skin cells, and lastly apply your moisturizer before crawling into bed. On the second night, apply retinol to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles before applying moisturizer. Lastly, on nights three and four, only apply moisturizer to let your skin rest and recover. Skin cycling promotes skinamilism by encouraging the use of fewer products and using those products to the best of their ability. Exfoliants and retinoids can cause redness and irritation to those with sensitive skin, if this is your case we recommend speaking to your dermatologist to create the best skin cycling regimen for you.
Cold girl Makeup Look
- Now that winter has come, tik tok has forgotten the summer dewy trend and has moved on to the “cold girl” makeup look. This look, seen on influencers like Hailey Beiber and Matilda Djerf, aims to look like you just reached the bottom of the ski mountain and consists of 4 products: a base, blush, red lipstick and highlighter. First apply your base, which can be foundation, a skin tint, or a bb cream. Next, get the blush out to mimic facial flushing from cold temperatures. Start by applying a heavy load of blush all over your cheeks, temples, and under your eyes. Continue dusting under your lip, on your cupid’s bow, and the tip of your nose to fully get that flushed look. Once your skin looks cold, it’s time to move onto your lips and eyes. Take your favorite red lipstick and press it into the center of your lips to just above where your top lip dips. The last step uses highlighter in the corner of your eyes to imitate frost. Cool girls all over are trying the cold girl trend and we are sure this will continue into next year.
Gua Sha Facial Massage
- When it comes to gua sha, western culture was very very late to the game. Gua sha goes way back, like to the stone age way back, where pieces of Bian stone would be scraped against your body when experiencing heat stroke or a virus. Today, researchers have discovered numerous uses of gua sha inside and out. Facial contouring, de-puffing, the release of toxins, the increase of blood flow, and lymphatic drainage are the known key benefits to gua sha. Thanks to ancient Chinese medicine, gua sha devices today are often made of beautiful and mesmerizing gemstones like jade or rose quartz rather than stone. Gua sha has been used in many different cultures throughout human history as the original form of self care, and finally us Americans are reaping the benefits too.
