For centuries, medicinal plants have been used and praised for their therapeutic properties and significant role in dermatology and cosmetology. From green tea to Aloe Vera, these plants have made a huge impact in various cosmetic applications.

In recent times, scientists and researchers have been searching for new natural substances that will not only promote skin health but protect the skin against the sun and free radicals — focusing on each substance’s role in skin health.

Medicinal plants in skincare

The use of medicinal plants originates from the wide variety of bioactive chemicals. Each plant provides specific skin advantages for various skin types of concerns. For example, aloe vera, is often recognized for its soothing effects — used as a topical treatment for sunburns, burns, or healing the skin. Aloe vera also includes polysaccharides that relax and hydrate the skin, making it a popular ingredient in moisturizers and soothing gel.

Similar to aloe vera, green tea extract is high in antioxidants and has been praised for its anti-aging and anti-inflammatory effects. Furthermore, green tea extract can help protect the skin from environmental harm and promote a youthful complexion. In addition, it diminishes the signs of aging and calms discoloration. Individuals suffering from redness and swelling of the skin use green tea extract as it can repair damaged skin.

Medicinal herbs are unique in the cosmetics and dermatology industry because they provide multipurpose use for skin health. These plants offer a wide range of benefits such as UV protection, moisture, acne treatment, and collagen formation. For example, licorice root extract — supplemented with glabridin has skin-brightening qualities, making it a well-liked ingredient in products. Licorice root extract is also aimed to treat uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation.

Research behind medicinal plants

A recent study was carried out by researchers to learn and preserve ancestral knowledge of medicinal plants used in traditional pharmacopeia among the population of Izarene for the treatment of dermatological problems. In the study, it was found that wild carrots, Dittrich viscose, and henna are used to treat skin allergies like eczema. Other plants like Queen Anne’s lace and anacyclus pyrethrum are used to manage autoimmune diseases such as vitiligo. The findings could serve as a foundation for future research into the development of medicinal plants used to treat dermatological illnesses. In addition, the database collected can help biochemists and pharmacologists identify active compounds in medicinal plants used to treat skin-related conditions [2].

According to the National Library of Medicine, polysaccharides, and peptides, as well as components of essential oils, have a significant role in anti-aging due to their multifaceted biological function. Furthermore, their antibacterial, soothing, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and UV protective have a high antioxidant impact. As a result, potentially helps individuals with skin conditions. They’re also valued for their antifungal, antiseptic, and antimicrobial properties. Plant extracts are currently one of the most popular substances used in skincare products because of their gentle, safe, and effective action [1].

Moreover, plant extracts are known to be beneficial because of their rich source of active chemicals, an important class of multifunctional skin care products — their ability to enhance skin condition and appearance, potential application to treat numerous skin illnesses such as psoriasis, phototoxicity, and atopic dermatitis. And since the plants’ biological action is linked to their antioxidant activity — they can support the skin’s defense mechanisms better [1].

Which medicinal plant is right for you

Before purchasing a skin care product that has medicinal plants it is always important to do thorough research. Especially since they have become a popular natural skincare solution because of their environmental consciousness and overall beneficial properties.

1. You should consider your skin type — is it oily? Is it dry? Is it normal to dry? Is it a combination or sensitive? Because medicinal plants offer different and specific benefits that target various skin types.

2. You should determine your skin concerns — do you want to address acne, hyperpigmentation, aging, hydration, or sensitivity? If so, choose a medicinal plant that is known to cater to your specific skin issue(s).

3. As always, you should consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional if you are unsure about which medicinal plant is right for you. They will provide you with personalized and helpful recommendations based on your skin type.

4. Do a patch test! Performing a patch test is always a good way to know if your skin will become irritated from the product. On a small area of the skin, apply the product and wait 48 hours to check for adverse reactions or sensitivities.
