What is Dry Body Brushing?
By: Julianna Ancmon
Dry body brushing is a wellness practice gaining popularity for its potential benefits for skin health and overall well-being. This technique involves using a natural-bristle brush to gently massage the skin in upward strokes, typically before a shower. Advocates of dry body brushing claim a variety of advantages, ranging from exfoliation to improved circulation. According to Forbes Health, “…there are no clinical trials to validate the benefits of dry brushing, experts agree that when done correctly, dry brushing is a healthy practice.
There are many benefits that come from dry brushing, such as, exfoliation, open pores, detoxification, immune system support, may improve cellulite, promote relaxation and stimulate energy.
The primary benefit of dry body brushing is exfoliation. Dry body brushing is a type of mechanical exfoliation on the top layer of skin. Exfoliation improves skin complexion by removing dead skin cells which may also help to unclog the pores. In addition, exfoliation may lead to an even skin tone which can reduce the appearances of dry patches.
Healthline states, “There is little scientific evidence to support the benefits of dry brushing. There is anecdotal evidence, however.” Consumers of dry brushing claim that the practice supports the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system supports the body by detoxifying and transporting waste/toxins away from cells. Healthline suggests that the dry brush bristles open up and stimulate the pores. Opening the pores makes it easier to sweat which in turn allows the body to release any toxins.
It’s essential to approach dry body brushing with care to avoid skin irritation or damage. Make sure that your dry brush has soft bristles and apply gentle pressure. It is recommended to begin by brushing with an upwards motion towards the heart. Start brushing at the feet while moving upwards in long sweeping motions. Be aware of and avoid any sensitive areas, cuts, or sunburned skin.
Although many individuals report having a positive experience with dry brushing, there is still not enough scientific evidence to prove the claimed benefits. Dry body brushing is a holistic approach to your skincare practice. Skincare enthusiasts believe that dry brushing can promote exfoliation, improved circulation, and support the lymphatic system. Everyone’s experience with dry brushing will vary. It is important to practice with caution and always start out with a gentle dry brush. As with any wellness trend, consulting with a healthcare professional is advisable, especially for those with pre-existing skin conditions.
