This Fragrance Friday, Ekta sits down with Whitney Swales, Founder of Wit & West Perfumes, to discuss her journey into perfumery and the inspiration behind the line, which is the natural world moving away from synthetic ingredients. Whitney grew up in Colorado Springs, prominently known for its vast landscapes and wonderous nature. As her parents were also lovers of the perfume industry, it was only fitting that she would go down the path of scent.

“So, you know I always really loved perfumes it’s something that been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up in Colorado Springs, my parents had a British import shop called Swale Halls so after our last name. It had all sorts of things like British woolens, candies, tea, and it also had this perfume brand that’s a famous old perfume brand called Floris of London. So was really my first initial exposure to perfume and I was just enamored with it, and I thought it was really cool and loved it whenever we got a new scent into the store!” (Swales).

As she comes from a corporate and financial background, Whitney thought she would not be fit to go into the line of perfumes without some scientific knowledge. Thankfully, she was able to see that the scent industry is more than just science but needs dedication to find the comfort consumers seek.

“As I started to research it more, I realized that the world of perfumery was changing in terms of how you access information from an education standpoint. How you access ingredients and it had become a bit more democratized. And so that was interesting to me, and I was kind of like okay so maybe you don’t need a chemistry degree and maybe there is this other path.” (Swales).

Whitney’s love for fragrance would only grow as she was as able to dive deeply into the world of natural ingredients to form the beautiful line we know today as Wit & West Perfumes!

“After I started to work with the materials and really got to know them, I really enjoyed the aspect of having this tide into nature and kind of connecting us with the natural world in a way that I don’t know I would have felt the same way about synthetic ingredients. So that’s kind of what drew me to it and it’s something that I was like you know I was like explain to my husband ‘I would like to go this path.’” (Swales).
