In today’s social media land, we consumers thrive off of what’s new and hot, trend-wise. So it’s super easy for someone who consumes social media to get wrapped up in skincare, makeup, and body care routine videos. But is that what we should really be doing?

It can be tiresome seeing all of these TikTok videos or Instagram Reels about these extensive skincare routines catered to and sometimes sponsored by creators to one specific person’s skin needs. The influence of the beauty community is enormous; that’s not a secret. However, sometimes the line is blurred between realism and fantasy.

As consumers, we need to ask ourselves, before buying a product, line, or collection a couple of questions. First, is this going to benefit my everyday life? Do I have the room for this right now? Do I see a realistic need for this product(s)? Is the product’s price tag worth it to me, amongst others?

If your answer to most of these questions is leaning toward no, you should research what products would benefit you. Take what aspect of the product that caught your eye and look for other products in the industry. This industry is massive, and there are millions of products in every category by hundreds of thousands of brands. I promise you; that you will find one that fits your needs perfectly. It’s all about knowing what you want from the product and finding a brand and specific item to give you that radiance you’re craving.

The world of influencers is intimidating. Everyone has those influencers or content creators that they relate to on a personal level. Whether they like their style of video or content, their fashion sense, or their makeup always looks flawless. Whatever it may be, I hear you; I am you; I, too, look up to those with platforms that are authentic and want to share their lives and opinions on beauty with the world. I admire these content creators for the work that they put in, but I also believe that some treat their platform like a business and make content based on their demographic (as they should).

I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve seen TikTok videos of influencers, or sometimes regular TikTok users, skincare drawers. I’m shocked at how many products they have, whether they’re sent as PR or go out and buy every product themselves. It blows my mind how many products these people show that they have. I think these videos can be damaging to viewers’ self-esteem. This idea that all of these serums and gels will make you look like Kim K just isn’t realistic. This obsession right now with the “Clean Girl” look may not be for you. My point here is this, find yourself in beauty and make up your own rules; you don’t need to fit a mold.

It can damage somebody just getting into beauty or skincare to see all those products and think, “Wow, do I need all that?” The answer is no. The answer is that you need to find what works for you and take people’s opinions as just that — their opinions. Form your own; it’s okay to do that; it’s okay to feel like you, like a product, that not a lot of other people are talking about, it’s okay. I think this needs to be said more.

I’ll leave you with this; everyone differs from the next. You are a unique person with different tastes, likes, and dislikes, and just because everyone is raving about the Rare Beauty Blush or Charlotte Tillbury’s Flawless Filter doesn’t mean it’s the right fit for you. Your fit is out there waiting!
